Hey Doctor, Listen To Me…No Listen To ME!!

I am sure most of you have seen the Mateo video asking his mother Linda for cupcakes.

It made me stop and think about the comments, thoughts, feelings, and stories that have been shared in the past week about the #MyIdealPtExp project. (original post)

All of us, no matter if we are the patient, a healthcare professional, a physician, or an administrator, all we want is for the other people in the room to listen to us. To understand our point of view. To understand our needs. Our expectations. Our wants. Our fears.

We do not want to be seen. We want to be remembered. You remember by listening. Active listening. Participatory listening.

Not listening to respond.

Listening to truly understand the story that someone is sharing with you.

Remember that when you talk to a patient. Remember that when you talk to a physician.

Remember the Mateo inside of you.

  1. Love the phrase “participatory listening”. That is a good reminder for patients and docs, as without that engaged listening, we have no real communication. Think of a medical system that really listened.
Check out http://www.participatorymedicine.org to meet hundreds of people who “get it” and are working to change the system for the better.
